WOODY ALLEN: WHAT´S NEW PUSSYCAT

Allen Stewart Konigsberg nacido el 1 de Diciembre de 1935, en Brooklyn N. Y. pésimo estudiante, con mediocres calificaciones, confiesa que dedicaba mas su tiempo a ver cine, oir musica y leer comics.

Siempre gustó de hacer mención sobre su infancia, con frases como "En una ocasión me raptaron. Mi padre se puso enseguida en acción: alquiló mi habitación." "Mis padres no solían pegarme; lo hicieron sólo en una ocasión. Empezaron en febrero de1940 y terminaron en mayo de 1943".

Vivió en sitios como Flatbush, estudió en la Escuela pública No 99, ("una escuela para maestros con trastornos emocionales"), pasó desapercibido, de hecho sus compañeros de clase no lo recuerdan, y los pocos lo recuerdan con el apodo de "Red" por el color de su cabello.

Woody recuerda que a pesar de vivir sin carencias..se veía como un chico triste que nada satisfacía.

Finalmente decidió estudiar produccion cinematográfica, pero como se aburria como una ostra, dejo la Universidad el primer semestre, motivo por el cual, se dedico en esos años a escribir sketches para David Alber Associates.

Trabajó bajo la sombra de muchos comediantes importantes, a los cuales les escribia todos sus chistes sin que se le atribuyese su autoría, hasta que tuvo su primera oportunidad en Borscht Belt (de donde salieron tambien Jerry Lewis y Mel Brooks). Su saltó al público se produjo en un pequeño local, el Duplex: "Fue el peor año de mi vida. Sentía ese miedo en el estómago por la mañana nada más levantarme, y no me deshacía de él hasta las once de la noche, cuando empezaba a recitar".

Su primera oportunidad en el cine fué con la cinta "What´s New Pussycat"(1965); es de notar que aunque siendo esta su primera incursión como guionista, los actores son de lo mas importante para la época.

Participan en ella:

Peter Sellers, Peter O´Toole, Ursula Andress, Rommy Schneider, Capucine, Francoise Hardy y el mismo Woddy Allen.

Además esta cinta fue nominada al Oscar por el tema musical del mismo nombre, es interpretada por Tom Jones, y el autor Burt Bacharach.

Es una comedia de situación, alocada, filada en París, con Peter O´Toole, como un moderno Don Juan, conquistador, pero al verse enredado en demasiados problemas, intenta visitar a un psiquiatra (Peter Sellers) para que lo cure de esa debilidad.

El psiquiatra, resulta ser igual o peor, aunque está casado con una celosa mujer regordeta, que lo persigue a todos lados; Juntos, (Woody Allen, Peter O´Toole, Peter Sellers) organizan un desastre al hospedarse en un hotel para terapia, donde aparecen todas las conquistas y esposas.

CUAL ES LA MEJOR PELICULA DE WODDY ALLEN?
DIFICIL DECIDIR, PERO, DE ENTRE TODAS..CON CUAL TE QUEDARIAS?

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST

Cuantas veces hemos sentido dentro...en la piel del protagonista, al ver una película de verdad bien actuada y bien escrita.
Cuantas veces, podemos proyectar toda clase de emociones, como llorar o reir y tal vez hasta sentir temor con alguna escena.

Algunos hasta han decidio convertirse en cineastas en el mismo instante que esa escena, llenó su mundo.

Pocos actores son capaces de transmitir, de llevarnos a esos mundos ficticios...tan apegados a la realidad, como lo hace Jack Nicholson...

ack Nicholson, nacido en 1937 en Manhattan, NY, abandonado por su padre a temprana edad, fue educado por sus abuelos que por muchos años supuso eran sus padres y su madre y tia sus hermanas mayores.
Terminando la preparatoria trabajo para la Metro Goldwyn Mayer, como oficinista mientras estudiaba teatro.
Inició su vida dentro del cine en la década de los 50´s

Jack Nicholson ha hecho al rededor de 70 películas de las cuales, la mayoría han sido grandes e importantes filmes, como Easy Ryder ('69) al lado de Peter Fonda, Denis Hooper y el gran Phil Spector..por la cual sería nominado por primera vez al Oscar como actor secundario
Otra gran producción donde la actuación de Nicholson es genial es en la película Chinatown, del director Roman Polansky. Esta es una típica cinta del cine negro, donde interpreta a un abogado al lado de Faye Dunaway y John Houston.. En esta cinta seria nominado por 5° vez al Oscar.
Mas tarde Jack, tendrá una pequeña participación en la Rock Opera "Tommy" de The Who, donde interpreta al Doctor.

La cinta que lo llevaría al estrellato, despues de muchos intentos y con la cual recibe su primer Oscar, es One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, del director Milos Forman, basada en la novela de Ken Kesey, una historia realmente impactante.
(Muy pocas son las cintas que reciben el Oscar por mejor película, mejor actor y mejor actriz, y esta tuvo este mérito)
En esta, Nicholson da vida a un estafador, que para evitar ser llevado a prisión alega demencia y es llevado a un Hospital Neuropsiquiátrico, donde procura hacer una revolución junto con los internos e intenta mostrarles que hay una vida mas allá de la que les permite la enfermera en jefe, organiza juegos de basketball, noches de alcohol, juegos de azar, etc.
Pero la enfermera estructurada y rigida, descubre su juego.
La escena de electoshock es buenísima, las lobotomías, terapias de grupo, represalias y castigos...son conmovedores y el final... es lo mejor.
Por cierto en esta película podemos ver las actuaciones de excelentes actores como:
Louise Fletcher, Dany deVito, Christopher Lloyd, Vincent Schiavelli y Anjelica Houston entre otros.

La siguiente gran película que realizaría y que le consagraría es una de las mas grandes e importantes (si no la mejor de todos los tiempos) películas de terror.... "El Resplandor" (The Shining), de Stanley Kubrick, basada en la novela de Stephen King, donde hace el papel de un escritor alcoholico y patético, sin trabajo e incapaz de escribir nada, y donde se encargará de cuidar un hotel en invierno junto con su esposa e hijo.
Antes de dejarles en el hotel es advertido que en el invierno anterior el cuidador perdió la razón.
Esto no le preocupa, pero con el transcurso de los dias...enloquece e intenta matar a su esposa e hijo.
Dentro de su locura es aconsejado por fantasmas que habitan el lugar.
En esta cinta increiblemente a pesar de ser una obra maestra..ninguno..ni Jack Nicholson, ni Stanley Kubrick son nominados al Oscar sorprendentemente a pesar de la increible interpretacion actoral y la maestria de las tomas y planos como la direccion de Kubrick.
Otras nominaciones y participaciones de Nicholson son "El Cartero Siempre llama 2 veces" (The Postman Always Rings Twice) de Bob Rafaelson, con Jessica Lange y Anjelica Houston.
Otra nominacion al Oscar con la película "Reds", al lado de Warren Beatty y Diane Keaton.

As Good as It Gets (mejor imposible) de James L. Brooks...con esta película obtiene su tercer Oscar como mejor actor, junto con la atriz Hellen Hunt, que tambien recibe el Oscar por su actuación.
Esta cinta me gusta especialmente, porque es el vivo retrato de alguien muy allegado a mi...por hacerlo leve..
Y...Something´s Gotta Give, de Nancy Mayers, con Diane Keaton y Keanu Reeves, una comedia ligera con excelentes actuaciones, divertida y muy acertada.
Jack Nicholson es el actor mas nominado (12 veces)y con mas Oscar recibidos (3), ademas de 10 nominaciones al Golden Globe y ganador de 4 de ellos.

Aun esperamos nos siga dando sorpresas en sus interpretaciones ya que tenemos Jack para un buen tiempo.

4 WEDDINGS AN A FUNERAL

De todo el cine que me gusta ver.. el británico es uno de mis favoritos.
Las producciones inglesas no cuentan con esas superproducciones que nos presenta Hollywood, pero cuenta con algo mas interesante..el libreto..
En la mayoria de las cintas inglesas, se puede sentir el realismo tan cercano..que puedes oler los campos y la misma ciudad con solo mirar la pantalla.. y por supuesto yo me dejo arrastar por parajes y veredas..y por una buena historia que me deje pensando o aseverando...

Tal es el caso de 4 Bodas y un Funeral ( Four weddings and a funeral)
Inicia... muy temprano, suena el despertador y allí está Hugh Grant –Charles-levantàndose para ir a la boda de un amigo, la primera boda....están todos en la Iglesia, hermosa por cierto con sus bancos y decorados, ellos los novios muy contentos, el cura mirándolos a todos y atrás sentados los amigos, esa barra inseparable de solteros empedernidos perfectamente vestidos para la ocasión, luego la fiesta y allí en esos tìpicos paisajes londinenses, luego el discurso del padrino -Charles-(que para amigos así...) bastante original.
Ellos Carrie y Charles..necesitan pasar por cuatro bodas y un funeral, para comprender, que están hechos el uno para el otro....
Otro punto destacable del libreto es como retrata la complicidad entre cada uno de los componentes del grupo de amigos .
Cada uno sabe los defectos y secretos del otro y se produce así una soltura global que la hace muy amena.
Esta película no es la mas romántica, ni la mejor comedia del mundo...no hay efectos especiales... Está hecha con poco presupuesto..pero por diversos extraños movimientos y pasajes..te lleva a recordar todas esas bodas que has vivido... tus amigos..y el momento preciso de cuando estuviste alli frente al altar...
El funeral..de lo mejor..sobre todo emotivo, cuando John Hannah frente a toda esa barra de amigos y el feretro...recita la poesía de Wystan Hugh Auden :

Sobre Marlon Brando podria escribir casi todo

Lo descubrí por casualidad allá por principios de los 70´s, esperando a mi padre, al que habia acompañado a dejar algunas fotografías y un par de articulos..

En el cine de al lado..daban "Un Tranvía llamado deseo" (An streetcar named Desirée) (1951)

Para entonces ignoraba lo que era actuar bien o la diferencia entre no hacerlo bien...y la grandeza de este arte, pero inmediatamente me di cuenta que era lo mejor que habia visto a mi corta edad.

A partir de ese momento solo queria saber si exisitían mas películas de este actor o si me habia perdido de algo...

Durante mis años de Universidad, en todos los circulos de cine de arte, asistía buscando sus películas, ya que era imposible localizarlas en video o en otros formatos, como en la actualidad uno puede toparse con ellos en cualquier Blockbuster o similares en formato DVD.

Por mi afàn de busqueda de los filmes de Brando, osè meterme a cines de infima categoría, de esos a los que había que entrar con un ladrillo y un periódico enrollado, para espantarse las "ratas" o cualquier bichejo raro..(ja!), pero era una oportunidad mas para ver alguna cinta que no había visto aun de Brando. Así me recorrí sitios..hasta que pude ver toda su flimografía.

Brando fue un niño inseguro, con muchos traumas causados por su madre, que nunca reconocío el talento de su hijo, asì como su esplendido trabajo; todo su esfuerzo fue siempre dirigido al reconocimiento de ella, que un dia lo viera actuar y lo aplaudiera, todo ello lo llevó a ser un chico reblede, corrido de colegios, peleador e infeliz.

Tuvo la suerte de tomar su camino, animado por su padre e irse a vivir a New York, donde tomaría clases de actuación en el Actor Studio con Konstantin Stanislavsky , aprendiendo "el Método" de Lee Strasberg, y siendo alumno sobresaliente, lo que lo llevó a su excelente estilo de pocas palabras pero suficiente rostro para convencer.

Su gran carisma, le proporcionó grandes romances, se le vió con todas las actrices del momento, tuvo 3 matrimonios fallidos y 3 hijos, pero en realidad nunca pudo amar realmente a ninguna mujer.

Brando debutó en el cine con la película "A Streetcar named Desirée", dirigida por Elia Kazan, en la cual fue nominado por primera vez a un Oscar por su actuación.

El siguiente año también fué nominado por la película "Viva Zapata!" también dirigida por Elia Kazan, donde interpreta al caudillo Emiliano Zapata con gran belleza.

Para '53 y '54 hace un par de películas mas... "Julius Caesar" nominado también al Oscar y " the Wild One" donde se ve en pantalla por primera vez a un motociclista con chamarra de cuero, jeans, botas, lentes oscuros, que para mi gusto debió ser nominado nuevamente al Oscar por su actuación en esta.

En 54 realiza la película donde se gana su primer Oscar "On the waterfront" donde hace de un boxeador venido a menos y es usado como esquirol; este se enamora de la hija de uno de los líderes que están en la huelga y cambia de bando creandose un verdadero drama.

A partir de aqui hizo peliculas muy regulares hasta "Sayonara" donde es nominado nuevamente al Oscar, y realiza una actuación excelente. No haria nada muy convincente exeptuando la "Queimada" (donde interpreta a William Walker, quien abolìo la esclavitud en esta isla) "Mutiny on the Bounty" y "The Nightcomers" hasta "the Godfather" donde se ganara por segunda vez el Oscar por su actuación, ( el mismo creó el diseño de imagen y maquillaje así como voz y estilo).

Para mi Brando ,fue el tipo mas carismático y mas hermoso, el hombre perfecto, que pudo darnos el cine, claro, unido a todo su excelente poencial de actuación, aunque después de un tiempo, tampoco le importó mucho, tal es el caso que cuando ganó su 2° Oscar, con la actuación de "the Godfather", rechazó este, frente a millones de espectadores, con la presencia de una mujer de oringen indio, que se manifestó en contra del tratamiento que recibía su pueblo en las películas de Hollywood.

Despues de esta película su carrera fue muy errática, aun hizo un par de buenas películas como "Tha last Tango en París"(donde es nominado por ultima vez para el Oscar y merecía ganarlo segun todos los críticos de las época, pero temieron darselo y ser rechazado por segunda vez) y "Apocalipsis Now"

Dirigió una película "One-Eye Jacks" muy regular donde trabaja con varios actores mexicanos.

Marlon Brando murió hace apenas un par de años (2004)...viviendo en su paradisiaca isla muy cercana a Tahití, lugar que conocío y se enamoró cuando filmara la película "Mutiny on the Bounty", y donde conoció a su tercera esposa Tarita con la que trabajara en esta misma película.
